With over 150 resorts in the Maldives, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. Every resort claims to be "the best," and the photos make them all look breathtaking. But the reality is that the variation between properties is enormous — in size, style, reef quality, dining, distance from Malé, and overall experience.
After designing dozens of Maldives journeys and getting to know these resorts from the inside out, we've organized them into 6 categories so you know exactly what to expect. We use "atolls" because that's the internationally recognized term.
Ultra-Luxury Boutique (Fewer Than 30 Villas)
For those who seek the ultimate in privacy and exclusivity. These resorts are so intimate that the staff knows your name from the moment you arrive, and every detail feels as though it was crafted specifically for you.
Soneva Fushi. The pioneer of barefoot luxury. No shoes, no pretense — yet the service and dining are on another level entirely. Sprawling private-pool villas tucked within lush tropical vegetation, a stargazing observatory, a chocolate garden, and an open-air cinema. Soneva Fushi is for those who understand that true luxury isn't ostentation — it's freedom and exclusivity.
Cheval Blanc Randheli. LVMH in the Maldives. Impeccable design, refined French-inflected service, and exceptional dining. Each villa is an architectural work of art featuring an infinity pool and direct water access. For travelers who seek European ultra-luxury set against a tropical backdrop.
Kudadoo. The truest all-inclusive experience imaginable — absolutely everything is included: unlimited spa treatments, diving, excursions, all meals and beverages. Just 15 residences, each with a private butler. It is arguably the most exclusive all-inclusive property in the world.
Ultra-Luxury Large (80–100+ Villas)
More restaurant choices, activities, and experiences without sacrificing exclusivity. For those who want variety and never want to wonder what to do on night seven.
One&Only Reethi Rah. One of the largest and most complete resorts in the Maldives. Twelve restaurants, multiple private beaches, an expansive spa, spectacular diving experiences, and an exceptional children's club. This is the resort where you'll never run out of things to do — yet you can also spend an entire day doing absolutely nothing from the comfort of your private-pool villa.
Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi. Classic Waldorf elegance transposed to a tropical setting. Generously proportioned villas with flawless finishes, the legendary Waldorf service culture, and a dining program that includes Peacock Alley-inspired options. The island is large enough to feel spacious yet exclusive enough to feel genuinely private.
St. Regis Vommuli. Around-the-clock butler service, spectacular marine life-inspired design, world-class restaurants, and some of the most impressive overwater villas in the Maldives. The St. Regis Bloody Mary Ritual at sunset is a tradition that defines the entire experience.
Mid-Luxury (Exceptional Value)
Resorts that deliver an authentic Maldivian experience under the banner of well-known international hotel brands, at rates more accessible than the ultra-luxury tier.
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island. Home to the legendary Ithaa undersea restaurant — dining surrounded by a living coral reef is an experience that exists nowhere else on earth. Two connected islands, an overwater spa, and a legacy spanning decades. This is one of the most iconic resorts in the Maldives.
Hilton Amingiri. New, modern, and ideally situated close to Malé (accessible by speedboat). Contemporary design, excellent value, and the reassuring reliability of the Hilton brand.
Niyama Private Islands. Two connected islands with distinct personalities — one tailored to couples, the other to families. A submarine for exploring the ocean floor is utterly unique. Add an undersea restaurant and an underwater nightclub, and it's clear this resort goes well beyond the typical beach escape.
Anantara Kihavah. A resident astronomer and stargazing observatory alongside an undersea restaurant. Spacious private-pool villas and an exceptional house reef perfect for snorkeling.
Accessible Luxury (4-Star)
The Maldives without breaking the bank. These resorts prove that you don't need to spend $3,000 a night to experience the magic of these islands.
Cocoon Maldives. Italian design (Lago Design), vibrant, modern, and full of youthful energy. Excellent value with an all-inclusive option available.
You & Me Maldives. Adults-only, intimate, and effortlessly romantic. Overwater villas at accessible price points, complete with an undersea restaurant you'd normally only find at ultra-luxury properties.
Furaveri Maldives. A generously sized island with plenty of space, decent shore snorkeling, and a laid-back atmosphere. Strong value for what it delivers.
Anantara Dhigu. Conveniently located (speedboat transfer from Malé), dependable Anantara service, and an ideal entry point into the world of Maldivian travel.
Family-Friendly
The Maldives isn't only for couples — there are outstanding family resorts offering multi-bedroom villas and engaging activities for children of all ages.
Soneva Fushi. The "Den" kids' club is widely regarded as the finest in the world — a vast space filled with activities that keep children happily occupied all day. Family villas available with up to nine bedrooms.
One&Only Reethi Rah. The KidsOnly Club offers programs for every age group. Spacious villas, multiple restaurants, and enough beach space to ensure the whole family is always entertained.
Kandima Maldives. Modern and activity-rich, with water sports, an art studio, and a vibrant, energetic atmosphere. Teenagers love it.
Adults-Only
For couples who want the assurance of a romantic atmosphere, completely child-free.
Baros Maldives. Small, intimate, and the quintessential romantic retreat. A quick speedboat ride from Malé, with a spectacular house reef and an atmosphere that defines romance in the Maldives. A classic for good reason.
Milaidhoo. Just 50 villas. Boutique, exclusive, with exceptional dining and service that feels genuinely personal. A perennial favorite among honeymooners seeking true intimacy.
Hurawalhi. Home to the 5.8 undersea restaurant — the largest in the world — along with a modern adults-only setting and a house reef where manta rays regularly glide past.
Anantara Veli. Accessible and elegant. Adults-only with the perfect balance of price, service, and experience. Reachable by speedboat from Malé.
"Vilu recommended the perfect resort for us — with exactly the reef we were hoping for, the villa of our dreams, and service that exceeded every expectation."
How to Choose the Right Resort
With 150+ options, these are the key factors your Travel Designer considers when making a recommendation:
Budget. Rates range from $500 to $5,000+ per night. Establishing your investment range is the essential first step.
Traveler profile. Romantic couple? Family? Group of friends? Honeymoon? Each profile has resorts that are simply a better fit.
Priorities. World-class snorkeling? Fine dining? An exceptional spa? Absolute privacy? A wide range of activities?
Distance from Malé. Speedboat transfer (more practical and economical) or seaplane (more exclusive, but pricier and subject to schedule restrictions)?
Resort size. An intimate boutique of 30 villas, or a larger property with 100+ options and greater variety?
Frequently Asked Questions About Maldives Hotels
Which is the best resort in the Maldives?
There isn't a universal answer. It depends entirely on what you're looking for. Soneva Fushi for barefoot luxury, One&Only for variety, Baros for intimate romance, Conrad for the undersea restaurant. Your Travel Designer will recommend the right fit based on your specific priorities.
Overwater villa or beach villa?
Most travelers dream of the overwater villa — and for good reason; waking up suspended above the water is genuinely magical. But beach villas offer more space and direct access to the sand. Our recommendation: experience both during your stay — 3 nights in a beach villa followed by 4 in an overwater villa (or the reverse).
Is all-inclusive worth it in the Maldives?
At remote resorts where everything carries a premium price, all-inclusive delivers complete peace of mind. At properties offering competitive half-board rates, you may find greater flexibility by paying à la carte. Your Travel Designer will calculate which option makes more financial sense in each specific case.
